Al-Sultan & Khalaf

Rebuilding an industrial company's website, from copy to code.

After completing my MA in Web Development and Content Management, my first freelance project was redesigning and rebuilding the website for Al-Sultan & Khalaf Trading Co., my dad's industrial equipment company in Kuwait.

Al-Sultan & Khalaf Trading Co. supplies industrial equipment across Kuwait. Its corporate website ran on NopCommerce and was managed by an outside agency, so the company couldn't update its own content. The brief: a clear, modern site that tells the company's story and that the team can run in-house.

  1. 01

    Content First

The old site was built in the early 2000s and hadn't been touched since, so before any design work I started with the overall content. I updated and rewrote the content for the homepage, about us and company history, and each division.

  2. 02

    Site Structure

With the content ready, I reorganised how it all fits together. I kept the project focused on the corporate site and built the navigation around the divisions, giving every visitor a clear route to what they're looking for.

  3. 03

    Custom Theme

The original site ran on NopCommerce through an outside agency, which made even small updates depend on them. I moved it to WordPress and built a custom theme from scratch. This will make it easier for me to manage since I am the one building it.

  4. 04

    Transfering the Content

Next came moving everything over: setting up the pages, bringing in the new copy and images, and checking that each division page displayed correctly across devices.

  5. 05

    Launch

The final step was moving the domain onto new hosting, setting up DNS and SSL, and handing the site over to the team.

This project brought together everything I've been working towards: the copywriting, brand sense from my marketing years, and the technical skills from my MA. Starting with the content rather than the design made an easier flow, because I knew exactly what each page needed to say before deciding how it should look.

Working on my dad's company also meant being client, writer, designer and developer at once. The biggest win is that the company now owns its website and can update it without relying on an outside agency.
